That Jimmy
Singh Toor (born October 5,1969) is a TV commercial/TV program Executive Producer
from Malaysia. He has achieved great and amazing success in the South East Asia
advertising and Malaysia TV program industries. His best Achievement that he is
really proud of is the Vietnam
Helmet awareness campaign 2009, that gives an impact and social awareness
of people lives. He has diverse exposure and professional experiences in South East
Asia and he is the one of the man behind the revolutionary of TV commercial era
in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. He contributed
in the setting up of international standards to these countries. Much of his
work have won awards in South East Asia and he was also nominated for The International
London Advertising Awards, a prestigious Advertising award and The Cannes Film
Awards, also a prestige New York advertising award.
He is also
one the main persons responsible for increasing the rating of Astro’s Ria TV channel.
Early life
The son of Daljit Toor, and Katar Sidhu, Jimmy was
born in a small town in Raub,
Pahang. He attended Mahmud High School, in Raub, Pahang. When he was 10
years old he started to get involved in sports mainly, hockey, football and
cricket. He represented the Pahang State for hockey when he was 16 years old.
The team became the Pahang’s favourite team after they won the state
championship.
After high school he and another 5 players from
his team was offered to play for The Royal Malaysian Navy hockey team. Jimmy
declined the offer because of his passion for movies. The art of filmmaking intrigued
him since he was young. He loved to watch movies and from this, his interest
grew into curiosity of how movies were made. So after high school he took the challenge
to work as a one of the crew for one of the leading production houses in Kuala
Lumpur that specialized in live shoots and television animation.

Production
Lensa Films
(1989 – 1994)
In 1989 he started his career as a member of
the film crew for Lensa Films, which was regarded as one of the leading
production houses in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
He worked as a crew for 8 months and decided
that he wanted to step up to a more serious position in the TVC making. He went
to his boss, the company owner and boldly told him ‘if you don’t hire me as a
producer you will lose a very good producer’. His attempt succeeded and he was
given the opportunity to become a full time producer in the company. From that
point onwards, he started being noticed by all the industry as a ‘hot-shot’
producer.
During his stint with Lensa Films he has
produced award-winning TV commercials and this caused him to be further noticed
by the Industry Owners.
AXIS Films,
Jakarta, Indonesia (1994 – 1998)
In 1994 he was approached by Axis Films Malaysia
to assist them in the setting up of Axis Films in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He took on the position of Executive Producer.
In Axis Films, Jakarta he started to network with foreign advertising
professional, such as directors, director of photography, art directors, stunt coordinators,
just to name a few. Due to networking, brought a large influx of foreign
production professionals to work with Axis Films Jakarta, which became a hit in
within the advertising industry in Indonesia. This collaboration meant producing
amazing TVCs that resulted in Axis Films Jakarta, winning ‘The Best Production
House’ Award in Indonesia 4 years in a row.
Jimmy was committed to his motto of ‘I pick the
best to make the best TVCs”
As such he not only worked with foreign production
professional but he also got involve with International Post Production House
and Audio Houses in order to take TV commercial making to its greatest heights.
This motto brought his further success in his career.
Freelance,
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1999 – 2002)
In 1999 recession hit the Malaysian economy. Despite
this set back Jimmy not only continued to produce a large number of TVCs for
Malaysia but expanded his exposure to produce more international TVC in Dubai,
Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Being a natural born fighter, he continued
to produce great TVCs for his clients to name a few, UNZA, Telkomsel and Dubai
Lingerie.
Having achieved all this, Jimmy started to get
restless and decided to this expand his wings and decided to us his expertise
in another medium of filmmaking, that being, TV programming.
Television Production
ASTRO Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia (2002 – 2004)
In 2002, he was approached by Astro Malaysia to
take on this challenge of which he accepted.
He started his career in Program Production in
ASTRO as an Executive Producer. Here, he took the opportunity to also direct
some programs for ASTRO RIA for show like Muzik d’ Ria, Dari Studio 1, Concert Merdeka
KLCC and Akademi Fantasia 1 & 2.
He revamped “Muzik
d’Ria, Dari Studio 1” from the lowest rating show to become one of the
highest rating TV programs for the ASTRO Ria Channel.
The program was such a hit as gave the whole
program a new look. He cheerful props and fan surprise visit but has hit the
revolution of live telecast show for this program where fan could call the
celebrity guess He also produced the show “Bersama Anita” (With Anita), a
Malaysia music industry icon as well top diva in Asia. The show was based on Anita
an entertainment TV talk show for her fans, mostly women. The topics of this
talk show covered a lot of interesting women, family and general issues. Having
a top Malaysian diva touching on everyday women issues the program being of a
problem, solution, type program, became a hit. Jimmy involvement in this talk
show gave him great experience to work with this extraordinary entertainer.
Another national hit TV program that he was
involved with was Akademi Fantasia.
Akademi Fantasia was Malaysia’s first music
related reality television show. The format for this show was similar to the
program “American Idol” but it hit Malaysian television way before the airing
of “American Idol”.
This program had a huge fan following, and once
again, it became on of Astro’s highest rating show in Malaysia. Jimmy produced 2 seasons for this show.

Passion
Pictures Jakarta, Indonesia (2004 – 2006)
In 2004, Jimmy was offered the position of
Executive Producer of Passion Pictures, Jakarta. With this come back he had success once again
when he has won The Indonesia’s Citra Pariwara Advertising Award and The Adoi
Awards for the same Telkomsel TVC and more.
He continued to work with big account such as…
Telkomsel, Unilever, Gudang Garam
and just more just to name a few.
Sud Est
Productions Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (2006 – 2009)
With his reputation of being a revolutionary Executive
Producer with the advertising industry, He has many offers from various
production houses within Asia who wanted to tap into his expertise to revamp
and help to production house owner to build their business.
Jimmy finally accepted the position of
Executive Producer in Sud Est Productions in Vietnam. Despite no knowledge of the advertising
business in Vietnam he took the challenge.
His hard work and determination once again
brought him success as he increased Sud Est Productions profit margin three
fold within 8 months from date of his joining the company.
Following his motto and same business
philosophy as when he was in Indonesia, He assisted in taking Vietnam
advertising industry to new era.
In 2008 he has collaborate with AIP NGO
foundation, Vietnam Helmet wearing Coalition (VHWC), and the Vietnamese government
to create a public awareness Traffic Safety campaign titled “ Helmets – No
Excuses”
The TV commercial produced for this campaign
not only won IPA Effectiveness Award from London but the entire campaign
contributed to the Vietnamese government making helmet wearing a mandatory law
throughout the whole of Vietnam
During his 2 years stint with Sud Est
Productions, Jimmy won awards for KFC and Helmet TVC.
Fatman Films
Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (2009 -20012)
Due to his success, Jimmy finally made the decision
to open his own production house, which he called Fatman Films. Here Jimmy
decided to run a production house that mirrored his personality, which was in
line with business motto. The only
difference here was that he could do things independently.
In Fatman Films, Jimmy produced several award
winning commercials and even brought foreign work into Vietnam, creating a
production support based industry for Vietnam.
Due to the large amount of work that was being
done by Fatman Films, Jimmy knew that it was time for expansion as large
projects meant large capital, Jimmy took in a local partner to join the
business. Fatman Films thrived for
another year.
Sadly due to different business philosophy, Jimmy decided to leave Fatman Films in Vietnam and return to
Malaysia.
Freelance
Present J.
He decided to come back to Malaysia and work as
freelancer.
Within a short time of returning to Malaysia,
Jimmy produced commercials for Peugeot, 408, Air Asia’s 10 Awesome Years and
several International brand TVCs.
Although Jimmy is still being offered jobs out
from Malaysia expertise, he has decided to settle back in Malaysia as he feels
that he want to contribute his expertise to his home country and hope to bring
Commercial making back to the way it was in the 80’s when Commercial making was
at it’s peak in Malaysia
Personal
life
Jimmy Toor is married to Salynah Abdulllah Sani
and is blessed with two daughters, Syarah Sufi and Jasmine Sufi Toor. He
currently lives in Kuala Lumpur with his family. It is his love for his family that has brought
Jimmy back to Malaysia as he believe that his family is his strength and is
comfortable with where he is at this point of his life.
